NEXT TO NORMAL
Music and book: Brian Yorkey & Tom Kitt
Next to Normal (2008) is a musical by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt, about the price we pay in order to love. Costumes used modern silhouettes and color to represent Diana’s love throughout her struggle with mental illness and loss. As Diana’s struggles affect those she loves, their costumes take on colors similar to Diana’s color- a burgundy purple. After Diana has a final dance with her deceased son, and as she breaks connections to memories of her love for him with ECT, costume colors fade to greyed versions representing faded memories. These colors eventually level out to clear blues and browns, with hints of Diana’s burgundy, as the family begins to heal.
CLYBOURNE PARK
By Bruce Norris
Clybourne Park is about gentrification in a suburban neighborhood in Chicago. It takes place in 1959 and 2003 as a modern continuation of A Rasin In The Sun by Lorraine Hansbury. The design included elements derived from red-lining maps of Manhattan and chaotic paintings of Jackson Pollock.
“We live in a society where speech is much more dangerous than activity – than action. … In the 50’s no one knows they should be embarrassed by what they are saying, 2009 everyone knows they should be embarrassed.” Playwright Bruce Norris
